Coffee doesn’t dehydrate most healthy adults; it doesn’t stunt growth in kids or teens, and dark roast isn’t automatically higher in caffeine than light roast. These are three of the most repeated coffee claims, and current research does not support any of them as popular belief suggests. Here’s what the evidence actually shows, and where the uncertainty still is.

Most of this article is about everyday myths, not emergencies. But caffeine is still an active drug. Get medical help right away for chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, severe agitation, tremors, vomiting, or confusion after caffeine intake — these can signal caffeine toxicity, especially with energy drinks, supplements, or pills rather than brewed coffee.
Myth 1: Coffee Dehydrates You
This myth comes from caffeine’s known diuretic effect — it does make the kidneys produce more urine. But research reviews have found that at the caffeine levels in a normal cup or two of coffee, this effect is too small to cause dehydration, and it fades further with regular drinking as the body builds tolerance.
A 2014 crossover study comparing daily moderate coffee intake to water intake found no meaningful difference in hydration markers between the two. Large research reviews going back decades reach a similar conclusion: standard servings of caffeinated drinks don’t have a measurable diuretic effect once you’re a regular drinker.
Where the myth has some truth: very high, concentrated caffeine doses — several cups taken quickly, or caffeine pills — can cause a short-term increase in urine output, especially in someone who isn’t used to caffeine. Myth 2: Coffee Stunts Your Growth
This is one of the oldest coffee myths, and it has no scientific backing. Height is determined mostly by genetics, along with nutrition, sleep, hormones, and general health during childhood and the teen years. No credible study has shown that coffee or caffeine directly blocks bone growth or reduces adult height.
Where the myth partly comes from: caffeine can modestly reduce how much calcium the body absorbs from a meal. Calcium matters for bone health, so early researchers connected the dots and assumed caffeine must limit growth. Later research found the calcium effect is small and easily offset by normal dietary calcium — it doesn’t translate into shorter adults. Pediatric health organizations that study child growth disorders consistently report caffeine is not a factor they see contributing to reduced height.
That doesn’t make coffee a good choice for kids. Myth 3: Dark Roast Has More Caffeine Than Light Roast
Caffeine is a stable compound and survives roasting temperatures with little change. Bean for bean, light and dark roast contain roughly similar caffeine — the bold taste of dark roast comes from the roasting chemistry that builds flavor, not from a bigger caffeine hit.
Where measurement gets confusing: dark roast beans lose more moisture and expand more during roasting, so they’re lighter and less dense than light roast beans. If you scoop coffee by volume (a tablespoon or a scoop), a dark roast scoop has fewer beans by weight than a light roast scoop — which can make light roast measure out to slightly more caffeine per scoop. Measuring by weight rather than volume eliminates most of that gap. Brew method and dose size affect your cup’s caffeine far more than roast level does.

Most coffee myths share a pattern: a real, narrow finding gets stretched into a broad claim, then repeated for generations until it feels like established fact. Early 20th-century marketing for coffee-substitute drinks leaned on growth and health fears to sell alternatives to coffee, which likely helped cement the stunted-growth idea in particular. The dehydration myth followed a similar path — a real short-term effect at high doses became a blanket warning applied to any amount of coffee.
Who Should Still Be Extra Careful With Caffeine
Debunking a myth doesn’t mean caffeine is risk-free for everyone. Talk with a clinician about your caffeine intake if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a heart rhythm condition or are told to watch your heart rate
- Take medicine that interacts with caffeine, or have anxiety that caffeine worsens
- Are a parent deciding how much caffeine, if any, is appropriate for a child or teen

Evidence Limits
Most of this research looks at healthy adults drinking moderate, ordinary amounts of coffee — not everyone reacts to caffeine the same way.
