Coffee Brewing Ratios and Grind Size by Method

Last updated Oct 9, 2026

By CoffeeWeekly.com Editorial Team

A repeatable brew starts with measurement

Baseline: weigh coffee and water, record grind and time, and change only one variable in the next cup.

Use one baseline, then change one variable

A practical starting ratio for filter coffee is 60 grams of coffee per liter of water, or about 1:16.7. Taste, roast, grinder, water, and brewer can justify a different result. The value of a ratio is repeatability, not obedience.

Method starting points

Method Grind Starting ratio Main adjustment
Pour-over Medium-fine 1:16 – 1:17 Finer for faster drawdown; coarser for bitterness or stalling
Drip machine Medium 1:16 – 1:17 Match basket and batch size
French press Medium-coarse 1:15 – 1:17 Longer steep before grinding finer
AeroPress Fine to medium Recipe-dependent Change dilution separately
Cold brew concentrate Coarse 1:5 – 1:8 Dilute after brewing

Diagnose the cup

  • Sour, thin, quick: grind finer, extend contact, or use hotter water.
  • Bitter, dry, slow: grind coarser, shorten contact, or lower extraction.
  • Weak but balanced: use more coffee.
  • Strong but balanced: use more water.

For mushroom coffee powders

Instant blends dissolve; they do not extract like ground coffee. Follow the stated serving, weigh it when possible, and adjust water for taste without assuming extra powder is medically better.
