How to Test and Dial In Your Water for Coffee: A Step-by-Step Home Workflow

Testing your water for coffee is a five-step loop, not a one-time check

To dial in water for coffee at home, you test your tap water’s TDS, taste a control brew, compare it against a target range, adjust with filtration or minerals if needed, and then re-test. Most people can do this with a basic digital TDS meter or test strips, one consistent brewing recipe, and about 20 minutes spread across a few days. This guide walks through that process step by step.

Important: a TDS meter does not check water safety

Before testing anything, know the limit of the tool. A TDS meter or test strip tells you roughly how many dissolved minerals and salts are in your water. It cannot detect lead, bacteria, or most chemical contaminants, and a low or “good” TDS reading does not mean your water is safe to drink. If you are on well water, live in an older building, or have any concern about lead, copper, or bacteria in your household water, a home TDS reading is not a substitute for a certified water test. Contact your local water utility or a certified water testing lab for that question first.

What you need before you start

  • A digital TDS meter or a set of water test strips
  • Your regular coffee, grinder, and brewer, so the only variable that changes is water
  • A notebook or notes app to log readings and tasting notes
  • Optional: a basic carbon filter pitcher, or bottled spring water, in case your tap water needs adjusting

This guide does not recommend a specific meter brand, filter, or mineral product. Any TDS meter that reads in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter (mg/L) works the same way for this process.

Step 1: Test your plain tap water first

Run the tap for a few seconds, fill a clean glass, and dip the TDS meter or test strip according to its instructions. Write down the number. This is your baseline before any filtering or brewing.

Step 2: Compare your reading to the general target range

Coffee professionals commonly aim for a TDS somewhere around 75–250 ppm in brewing water, as covered in our water quality and TDS guide. If your tap water falls inside that range, you likely don’t need to change anything before brewing. If it reads well below that range (very soft or filtered water) or well above it (very hard water), that’s a signal to test further with an actual brew before assuming a fix is needed.

Step 3: Brew a control cup and taste it

Use your normal ratio and grind for one brew, changing nothing except that you’re paying close attention to taste. Water is only one variable in that result, so keep grind size and temperature the same as usual while you test.

Step 4: Match the taste to a likely water cause

This table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Brew temperature, grind size, and coffee freshness can produce similar tastes, so change only one variable at a time.

Step 5: Re-test after any change

If you switch to filtered, bottled, or remineralized water, test its TDS the same way you tested your tap water, then brew and taste again using the same recipe as your control cup. Log both the number and the taste note. This is what turns the process into something repeatable, rather than guesswork you have to redo from scratch each time.

Building a simple testing log

A basic log only needs four columns: date, water source, TDS reading, and a one-line taste note. Over two or three weeks of testing different sources or filters, patterns usually show up quickly — for example, filtered water that consistently reads within range and tastes balanced becomes your new default, and you stop testing it every time.

When to stop adjusting and just pick a source

  • Your tap water already reads in the general target range and tastes balanced — no further adjustment needed.
  • You found one alternate source (filtered, bottled, or remineralized) that reads in range and tastes consistently better than tap — make that your default and stop re-testing every brew.
  • You’ve tested three or more sources and none taste meaningfully different — water may not be the limiting factor for your setup, and grind, ratio, or brew temperature are worth checking instead.

Evidence limits

The target TDS range referenced here reflects general guidance used across the specialty coffee industry, including standards published by the Specialty Coffee Association. It’s a starting range for taste optimization, not a safety standard, and individual taste preference can reasonably fall outside it. This guide does not test or endorse any specific meter, filter, or bottled water brand.

Extra caution: well water and older plumbing

If you’re on well water, or your home has older pipes or fixtures, mineral content and TDS are not the only things worth knowing about your water. Lead, copper, and bacteria are not something a home TDS meter can detect. If you have any concern about contaminants beyond taste, a certified water test from your local utility or a certified lab is the reliable next step, not a home TDS reading.

FAQs

Do I need an expensive water testing kit to do this?

No. A basic digital TDS meter or a pack of test strips is enough to follow this process. More advanced lab testing is only necessary if you have specific safety concerns beyond taste, like lead or bacteria.

How often should I re-test my water?

Testing again after any change in your water source, filter, or the seasons (since municipal water can shift) is reasonable. Once you’ve settled on a source that reads in range and tastes consistent, frequent re-testing usually isn’t necessary.

Can I use this same process for a mushroom coffee blend?
