What the human studies found
A handful of small, controlled human trials have tested cordyceps extracts directly:
- A study of 22 male cyclists who took 3 grams of Cs-4 daily for 5 weeks found no difference in endurance performance or oxidative capacity compared to placebo.
- A study of 15 older adults who took Cs-4 three times daily for 12 weeks found no difference in maximal oxygen uptake compared to placebo.
- A study of long-distance runners given a Cordyceps militaris extract for 16 weeks looked at blood markers related to anemia, not athletic performance, and found no significant changes.
These are small studies, and small negative trials don’t prove an ingredient does nothing. But they are the actual controlled evidence base, and none of them support a reliable energy or endurance effect in humans from isolated cordyceps.
Why caffeine makes cordyceps effects hard to isolate
Mushroom coffee is still coffee. Caffeine is a well-studied stimulant with a clear, fast, dose-dependent effect on alertness. When a drink combines caffeine with cordyceps, any energy you feel could come from the caffeine, the cordyceps, both together, or expectation alone.

- Amount in grams or milligrams: studies used 0.5 to 4 grams daily; undisclosed amounts can’t be compared to research.
- Caffeine per serving: needed to separate a caffeine effect from anything cordyceps may do.
- Fruiting body vs. mycelium: different plant parts can have different compound levels.
- Third-party testing mentioned: confirms identity and purity, not effectiveness.

Safety and limits
Reported side effects in cordyceps studies are generally mild: stomach discomfort, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, or a rash. One published case report described a liver-related condition in an older adult after years of daily cordyceps use for an unrelated digestive issue; a direct cause was not confirmed. Because cordyceps may affect blood clotting, people on blood thinners or with a bleeding-related condition should ask a doctor before regular use. Caffeine limits still apply on top of this — the FDA references 400 mg a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects in most healthy adults, and mushroom coffee is not automatically low-caffeine just because it contains less coffee.
