One reason: the ORAC scale, an older method once used to rank foods and supplements by antioxidant capacity, was withdrawn by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2012 because a high score in the lab does not reliably predict what happens inside the body. A compound can neutralize free radicals in a test tube and still not survive digestion, absorb well, or reach the tissue where it might matter.

- Coffee science: Well established. Caffeine’s effects on alertness and its general safety range are backed by large human studies and reviewed by the FDA.
- Chaga ingredient evidence: Early-stage. In-vitro and animal data show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Human trials are limited or missing.
- Seller claims: Often stretch early-stage lab findings into confident health promises. A high antioxidant score on a package is not the same as a proven human benefit.

- Chaga extract added to brewed coffee: Stir extract or powder into brewed coffee. Check the extract concentration and any added sugars.
- Chaga tea with separate coffee: Brewed separately, sometimes combined. If you combine both, add up the total caffeine from each.

The FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects for most healthy adults, though individual sensitivity, medications, and pregnancy can change what’s appropriate.
