What research says about coffee and the gut microbiome
Beyond acid and motility, scientists are studying whether coffee changes the mix of bacteria in your gut, known as the microbiome. A 2024 literature review of coffee’s effects on gut microbiota and bowel function found that moderate coffee intake, generally described in the reviewed studies as fewer than 4 cups a day, was associated with a shift toward certain bacterial groups that researchers consider beneficial, along with an overall increase in reported microbiome diversity. It’s worth being careful with this kind of research.
