What research actually shows

Caffeine reliably sharpens attention and reaction time within about 30 to 60 minutes of drinking coffee, and this effect is one of the most consistently reproduced findings in stimulant research. Working memory is a different story: when researchers control for caffeine’s general alertness boost, a clear separate benefit to memory itself is harder to prove. Long-term brain health claims are the least settled of the three and deserve the most caution.

Attention and reaction time: the strongest evidence

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in the journal Psychopharmacology pooled 31 randomized, placebo-controlled trials with 1,455 participants. It found that caffeine acutely improves both reaction time and accuracy on attention tasks in healthy adults. Reaction time continued to improve as the dose increased, but accuracy gains plateaued beyond a certain point and even declined at very high doses.

An earlier review in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews reported similar findings: across a broad range of doses, caffeine’s positive effect on attention appears to plateau around 200-300 mg, roughly the amount in two 12-ounce cups of brewed coffee. That review also noted the size of the effect varies by task type and by a person’s genetic differences in caffeine metabolism.

This aligns with the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health’s description of caffeine as a stimulant that can improve alertness and reaction time, while noting that effects vary by the amount consumed and by individual.

Working memory: a more complicated picture

Working memory is the ability to briefly hold and manipulate information, such as remembering a phone number long enough to dial it. Studies here are mixed. Some trials report that caffeine speeds up performance on working memory tasks, but researchers point out that this often reflects faster reaction time and sharper attention rather than a true boost to memory itself.

When researchers design tasks that separate memory function from those lower-level effects, several studies find no clear net benefit to working memory. One brain-imaging study using near-infrared spectroscopy found that caffeine altered blood-oxygenation patterns in memory-related brain regions without improving actual task performance. Another controlled trial linked daily caffeine intake to reduced activity in the hippocampus, a brain region central to memory, during a working memory task, despite no consistent change in performance.

The honest summary: caffeine helps you pay attention long enough to use your memory well, but the science does not support a claim that it makes memory itself stronger.

Long-term brain health: promising, not proven

Some observational research has linked regular coffee or caffeine consumption to a lower long-term risk of neurodegenerative conditions. Animal research funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health found that two coffee compounds, caffeine and eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide (EHT), protected nerve cells and improved outcomes together in mouse models of Parkinson’s disease and a related condition called dementia with Lewy bodies.

That is animal research, not a human clinical result, and it does not establish that drinking coffee prevents these diseases in people. A separate meta-analysis of human observational studies, cited in the Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews review above, actually called into question the broader link between coffee or tea drinking and reduced risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or cognitive decline. Human studies in this area are observational, meaning they can show a pattern but cannot prove caffeine caused it. Practical timing and dosing

  • Is it afternoon or evening, when caffeine’s roughly 5-hour half-life could still affect tonight’s sleep?
  • Do I have a heart rhythm condition, anxiety, pregnancy, or a medication interaction that changes what amount is appropriate for me?
